If Not Then was formed in 2006 by Brian Boyle and Jerome Covington as a way to investigate the use of electronics in improvised music. Sound sources such as acoustic and electric guitar, the human voice and environmental noises are processed via computer programs such as AudioMulch and Live. These processed melodies and noises are layered and interwoven with one another in a collage-like fashion.
The goal of If Not Then is to create an improvised music which is only possible through the use of electronics while at the same time avoiding references to or reliance upon popularly established genres of electronic music.
